Building a Model for Sustainable Villages
EcoVert’s Village Pilot aims to transform the twin communities of Jdeideh – Harharaya & Qattin into a model of environmental sustainability. With around 400 households and 2,000 citizens, this pilot project addresses the core challenges facing Lebanese villages today — from waste and water management to renewable energy and safer infrastructure.
Project Areas
1. Waste Management
- Launch recycling awareness campaigns.
- Provide bins and establish collection systems.
- Promote reusable grocery bags and distribute them to households.
2. Sewage Systems
- Designate safe sewage release areas.
- Introduce reed bed (roseaux) filtration for natural treatment.
3. Road Safety
- Install smart traffic lights with pedestrian call buttons and car sensors.
- Build sidewalks, crossings, and accessible infrastructure.
- Add designated bike lanes.
4. Nature Management
- Apply wildfire prevention methods to surrounding forests.
- Replant and expand forested areas.
- Create recreational trails: walking paths, barefoot trails, disabled-friendly paths.
- Develop parks with benches, lighting, outdoor gyms, and playgrounds.
- Launch permaculture initiatives, composting, and “Flower the Village” campaigns.
5. Water
- Install faucet valves to reduce waste.
- Construct a water reservoir at the village’s highest point.
- Install hydrants for fire emergencies.
6. Renewable Energy
- Invest in solar and wind systems to reduce reliance on generators.
- Provide up to 9 months of sustainable electricity.
7. Implementation & Enforcement
- Introduce fines for littering and unsafe driving.
- Enforce tree-cutting permits with strict penalties.
Impact
This holistic pilot project will:
- Serve as a replicable model for villages across Lebanon.
- Improve community health and safety.
- Reduce CO₂ emissions and reliance on diesel.
- Create accessible public spaces that foster community life.
